Women: How to Find the Perfect Jeans for your body type

When it comes to classic everyday style, nothing takes precedence quite like a great pair of jeans. Dress them up, dress them down, wear them with heels, wear them with flats—you just can’t go wrong, right? Wrong! While denim is the perfect everyday-wardrobe solution, it can also be one of the more challenging pieces to find that perfect fit.

Cut, rise, and wash all come to mind when sifting through denim. And body type, style, and tailoring all play a key role as well. Jeans are simple but finding the perfect fit takes a little finesse. These five handy tips will help you take out the guesswork, so you can slip on your best pair of jeans ever.

1. KNOW YOUR BODY TYPE

Apple. Hourglass. Athletic. Pear. Which one are you? It’s super-helpful to know your body type to pick the best silhouette (we’ll get to that in a sec). Selecting denim based on your body type isn’t about limiting your options, it’s about optimizing the styles you love in the correct length and rise, with the right amount of stretch, and in the best wash for you. Remember, denim is not one size fits all, so narrowing things down to a curated selection will help you find the best styles for you.

2. PICK A SILHOUETTE

So, now we get to the silhouette—simply put, the shape of your jeans. Skinny, slim-fit, boyfriend, are all common jean silhouettes. While high-rise, mid-rise, and low-rise are all common, well, rises. And finding the perfect combo for your shape is the key to your perfect fitting jeans.

For example, if you’re athletic and looking for a boyfriend jean you may want to go for a structured style with a midlow-rise. This will allow the jeans to hold their shape, creating flattering curves, while the midlow-rise elongates your frame.

However, if you’re an apple shape, you may want to opt for a high-rise version with stretch.  This style will comfortably skim your curves and nip you in at the waist. Same style of jeans, different materials and rises to best suit your body.

3. REMEMBER STRETCH IS YOUR FRIEND

Say it with us, “We love stretch!” Stretch will never lead you astray. The perfect amount of stretch offers comfort, support, and is super-helpful when you’re between sizes. Mott & Bow uses advanced fabrics weaved for high elasticity and everyday ease, like our comfort stretch (elasticity between 15—30%), stretch (elasticity between 35—44%), power stretch (elasticity between 45—54), and super power stretch (elasticity +55%).

Also, remember, jeans can fit a little snug at first try-on, but remember that they stretch out half a size after the first 10-20 wears. You shouldn’t experience bunching at the crotch, sagging at the butt, or looseness at the waist at your initial try-on.

4. GO WITH FLATTERING WASHES

You may have heard some of these names before: sandwash, whisker wash, sandblasting…all just fancy names for different types of washes. Washes usually correlate to the season’s current trends, but let’s talk about the obvious forever-fave, classic blue jeans! Dark denim, medium denim, and light denim are forever, like, they will never go out of style. While we’ve seen other intricate washes come, go, and come again (ahem, looking at you acid wash), these three washes will never let you down.

5. MEASURE YOUR INSEAM

Nix your tailor and opt for jeans already in your perfect length. The key is to measure your inseam and shop accordingly. Simply, place a measuring tape from the highest part of your inner thigh and take the length down to your ankle (getting a pal to help can make it a bit easier). Mott & Bow jeans come in 28”, 30”, and 32” inseams, so you can get YOUR perfect fit, every single time.

We know we just went through a lot and we understand if you still have some questions. But no worries, we have something that can help: our Home Try-On Program. It’s simple, buy your jeans and choose a second size for free. Try them both on and see which works best for you, then send us back the pair you don’t want, for free. It’s our way to help you pick the best-fitting jeans for you.
